Capsule wardrobe: yea or nay?

You’ve seen the blog posts: More women are trying out the idea of a capsule wardrobe. The basic idea is that by buying fewer, more versatile, and more cohesive items of clothing, you’ll save space and money.

There are lots of ways to approach a capsule wardrobe. Some experts suggest wearing just 37 clothing pieces items for three months straight, and others recommend choosing 33 items including clothes, accessories, and shoes you can wear every season—that means four mini capsules for the whole year.

Here are a few of the capsule-wardrobe advantages:

Freedom. Instead of spending your morning staring at a packed closet wondering what to wear, your options are limited, so you’ll spend less time getting dressed. And in theory, you’ll have narrowed items down to a tighter or more neutral color scheme, so most of the items will work well together. That means lots of mixing and matching for multiple looks.

More space. With your closet less stuffed, you’ll be able to store other things as needed (and you’ll better be able to see what’s in there).

More money. This one is obvious, but who doesn’t love having a little extra cash? This also allows you to invest in really high-quality clothes or shoes rather than buying lots of inexpensive items that won’t look good after a wear or two.

Clearly defined style. Your look has to be more defined with a capsule wardrobe. And that’s key to embracing your own distinct look.

And the cons? Well, shopping is fun! Buying a new outfit makes an upcoming event seem even more special.

If you’re more of a chameleon, you won’t like to be boxed in by the same styles and same colors every day. So consider your own taste to determine if you can be happy with a highly edited closet.

Then there’s wearing out clothes and tiring of the same old options every day. There just isn’t much room for unexpected or “new” outfits with a capsule wardrobe.

Could you live this way? Do any of you already have a capsule wardrobe, and if so, how is it working for you?
